Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. This pair of semi-detached mid-19th century villas on York Terrace were built in association with the adjacent former Free Church which was built in 1860, and the former manse (left). These villas at 2 and 3 York Terrace were possibly built to house other office-bearers for the church. They display good examples of the decorative cast-ironwork that is prevalent throughout Rothesay in the first-floor balconies and foliate cast-iron finials on the outer gables. The entrance doorways are slightly recessed below the central balcony, supported on slender timber columns. The villas sit in an elevated position overlooking Argyle Place and Rothesay Bay. The former manse at 1 and 1A York Terrace has been sub-divided during the late 20th century to create two flats, the upper flat being accessed via a first floor door in a later extension to the north side elevation.
