Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. Sitting in an elevated position adjacent to the former Rothesay Academy, Chapelhill Villa was built in the early 1860s, and was sub-divided in 1908, with further alterations in the late 20th century. Comprising a tall two-storeyed, three-bayed main block, there is a castellated central projecting tower on the front elevation. The villa has six-paned sash and case windows, and is built from cherrycocked sandstone. This style of stonework can be found throughout Rothesay, and consists of small stones being inserted in the joints between larger stones. Built on the site of St Bride’s Chapel (demolished c.1860), Chapelhill Villa served as a museum run by the local Archaeological and Physical Society from 1873 to the early 20th century. The views from the tower were a noted attraction for visitors to the town.
