Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. This early 19th-century detached house at 17 Argyle Terrace has been much altered from its original form. Like the neighbouring 21-25 Argyle Terrace, its ground floor appears lower than usual, with its main floor being on the first floor. A tall porch reached by a short flight of steps was added in the early 20th century. The ball and pointed finial along with dentil cornicing seen around the bay window here suggests that there were probably originally Scotch dormers in the attic, but these have been incorporated into a larger modern box dormer conversion to front and rear of the property. The terrace sits in an elevated position overlooking Argyle Place and Rothesay Bay. It is a striking property on the terrace with its black and white painted frontage, along with the porch entrance.
