Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. This group of early 19th-century houses at 5-11 Argyle Terrace comprises two two-storeyed, semi-detached houses with large full-height bay windows. All have been whitewashed, 5 and 7 (left) have pale blue-painted mock timber framing in the outer bays, and an additional bay with a second entrance doorway on the far left, making it asymmetrical. The adjacent, symmetrical 9 and 11 Argyle Terrace have decorative panels within the outer bays, and a canopied porch side entrance in the lane between the two properties. All have had replacement glazing inserted, though all in the same style with multiple small panes in the upper panels. The terrace sits in an elevated position at the corner of Argyle Terrace and MacKinlay Street overlooking Argyle Place and Rothesay Bay. Whilst being smaller than some of the properties in this area, this group still benefits from being situated high above Argyle Place below, affording views above the Bay.
