Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. The main road from the town centre follows the shoreline along Argyle Street, which leads on to the outer reaches of Ardbeg and Port Bannatyne. This shows a four-storeyed tenement at 27 Argyle Street. Dating from the late 19th century, it is typical of the period. It is five-bayed with full-height canted bay windows in the outer bays, a central communal entrance and an intricate decorative wrought-iron balustrade at roof level. This tenement, although built of yellow sandstone instead of the usual red sandstone, still takes some of its design features from the tenements of Glasgow, where so many of Rothesay's visitors came from. In particular, the decorative cast-iron balustrade at roof level protected a rooftop drying area which was seen in many tenements in Glasgow.
