Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. The main road from the town centre follows the shoreline along Argyle Street, which leads on to the outer reaches of Ardbeg and Port Bannatyne. This shows 1-22 Regal Place on Argyle Street, an adjoining pair of late 20th century four-storeyed tenements which were built on the site of the former Regal cinema. Both tenements are very plain with full-height bay windows in the outer bays. Both have an arched central communal entrance doorway, and there is a semi-octagonal corner bay with a bell-cast roof (left). Both tenements were built on the site of the former Regal cinema, which opened in 1938 as a venue for films and other entertainment for Rothesay's visitors. It closed in 1976 after a short spell as a bingo hall, being demolished soon afterwards. It was a typical example of an Art Deco cinema, with a cream and green tiled and red brick frontage.
