Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. The main road from the town centre follows the shoreline along Argyle Street and Argyle Place, which leads on to the outer reaches of Ardbeg and Port Bannatyne. Rothesay town centre and the outer reaches here in Argyle Place have original or replica Victorian cast-iron lamp posts along the shoreline. These display the Rothesay burgh coat of arms at the base, and are painted blue, along with the plain railings along the promenade seen in the background. The lamps have curved tops with swirling ironwork and the three towers emblem from the coat of arms as a finial with the ship emblem enclosed by more swirling ironwork within the underside of the curve. Rothesay has a great range of decorative ironwork throughout the town. Mostly displayed as finials and balconies on the grand villas in the suburbs, but also within the main town centre with cast-iron columns at entrances to hotels and especially at the Winter Gardens on the Esplanade. These traditional Victorian decorative lamp standards in the main town centre give some indication of the grandeur which would have been on display when Rothesay was at its most popular.
