Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. The main road from the town centre follows the shoreline along Argyle Place, which leads on to the outer reaches of Ardbeg and Port Bannatyne. This shows the double tenement at 6 and 7 Argyle Place (left) which is designed to give the impression of a grand three-storeyed villa, with mock timber-framing surrounding the large jettied gabled windows in the left bay. The central bay contains paired entrances reached by a balustraded set of steps over the basement floor. Adjacent to this tenement (right) is a medium-sized hotel, one of several located along the shoreline here. A large glazed porch stretches across the width of the ground floor. Unlike its neighbour, this building is very plain with only one bay window projecting at first floor. Most of the properties on the shoreline would have been rented out during the peak season, and many still remain as holiday accommodation.
