Scope and Content The main focus for expansion during the 19th century in the outer reaches of Rothesay was along the shoreline, or along Ardbeg Road further inland, heading for Port Bannatyne. Most of the development took the form of semi-detached villas looking out over the bay. However, several Victorian detached villas and cottages of varying scale are situated along the shoreline. Built around 1865, this two-storeyed, three-bayed detached cottage sits on a long plot on Marine Place. The cottage demonstrates the decorative ironwork and woodwork which can be seen throughout Rothesay's townscape. Here, the gabled upper windows are decorated with ornate foliate design red and white painted bargeboards and window boxes. Built of yellow sandstone, it has a canted tripartite bay window at ground floor in the eastern bay (left), and a central arched red painted, two-leaf entrance door. The upper floor has two gabled round-arched windows with a small arched dormer in the centre. The cottage makes a pair with Feolin, 19 Marine Place further east.
