Detail of wrought-iron roof finial at 25 Marine Place, Ardbeg, Rothesay, Bute

DP 101505

Description Detail of wrought-iron roof finial at 25 Marine Place, Ardbeg, Rothesay, Bute

Date 28/6/2011

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number DP 101505

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A variety of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses were built along Rothesay's seafront during its boom period in the 19th century. On Marine Place are groups of detached and semi-detached houses, many of which display similar features, which suggests they were designed by the same architect or built by the same builder. The two-storeyed, three-bayed, detached house at 25 Marine Place demonstrates many of the features seen in this part of the town. In particular, the gabled, double arched windows at first-floor level are topped by decorative wrought-iron finials with scroll and foliate patterns. The use of decorative ironwork is a common feature throughout the Rothesay townscape. There are fewer examples of decorative ironwork in the Ardbeg Area of Townscape Character than in other Areas. Using ornate cast and wrought iron embellishments was a way of demonstrating wealth and status of property owners, as well as allowing craftsmen to show off their skills.
