Scope and Content A variety of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses were built along Rothesay's seafront during its boom period in the 19th century. On Marine Place are groups of detached and semi-detached houses, many of which display similar features, which suggests they were designed by the same architect or built by the same builder. This group of two-storeyed, three-bayed, semi-detached and detached houses along Marine Place demonstrate many of the features seen in this part of the town. In particular, the large canted bay windows at ground floor, and gabled, double arched windows at first-floor level at 26 and 27 Marine Place (left), as well as 28 and 29 Marine Place (right) with their full-height curved bay windows in the outer bays, and gabled double arched windows in the central bay at upper floor which mimics that found on adjacent properties. A large proportion of Rothesay's seafront properties have large, often projecting canted or square bay windows, which allow as much light into the rooms as possible, as well as taking full advantage of the views. Being in a prime location on the shore, many of these properties would have been used as guest houses and small hotels, or second homes for visitors to the island. Many of the larger houses on the seafront have subsequently been converted into flats or are still used as guest houses and small hotels.
