Scope and Content As Rothesay expanded during its boom period in the 19th century, there was a need for a corresponding growth in residential properties for visitors and residents alike. One of the main features of Rothesay's townscape is the Glasgow-style tenement which appears throughout the town, especially along the shore. This pedimented '1914' datestone on a pair of adjoining four-storeyed tenements at 17 and 17A Battery Place is an example of one of the many features which are typical to those found across Rothesay. The red sandstone used in their construction came from the same quarries used for many of the Glasgow tenements, often carved into decorative features on chimneystacks, around entrance doorways and moulded stringcourses between each storey, as well as on features such as datestones like this. The bay windows in the outer bays of each tenement allowed residents to benefit from the light and the views available. Internally, many of these tenements also have the typical Glasgow-style 'wally' tiled closes along with stained glass to some internal doors and fanlights, and decorative cast-iron balustrades to staircases. The replication of these features helped to make those visitors who came 'Doon the Watter' feel at home during their stay.
