Scope and Content A variety of terraced houses and tenements were built along Rothesay's seafront during the 19th century. These range from the terraced whitewashed houses at 11-16 Battery Place, with their bay windows to take advantage of the views and the light, to imposing red or yellow sandstone tenements. These would have been some of the earliest buildings along this part of Rothesay's seafront. Many of the villas, terraces and tenements throughout Rothesay feature decorative stonework or ironwork. This curved double-height bay window at 11 Battery Place demonstrates the slender cast-iron columns which are used on many similar bay windows elsewhere in the town. Building on the seafront not only allowed those living in the villas and tenements to enjoy the views across the bay, but also demonstrated wealth and taste to those approaching the town by ferry from Wemyss Bay. As a result many of Rothesay's largest and most impressive villas were built right by the shore.
