Scope and Content A variety of terraced houses and tenements were built along Rothesay's seafront during the 19th century. These range from the terraced houses at 5, 6 and 7 Battery Place, varying from two-storeyed-plus attic (6) and basement (5), to three-storeyed (7), to the yellow sandstone tenement at 3 and 4 Battery Place. A large proportion of the seafront properties have large, often projecting canted or square bay windows, which allow as much light into the rooms as possible, as well as taking full advantage of the views across the bay. Being in a prime location on the shore, many of these properties would have been used as guest houses or second homes for visitors to the island. Many of the larger houses on the seafront have subsequently been converted into flats or are still used as guest houses and small hotels.
