Scope and Content The 19th century yellow sandstone tenement at 4 Battery Place has full-height bay windows in the outer bays, and white-painted pilastered entrance doorway. Set behind a low whitewashed boundary wall, it would have been one of the earliest buildings along this part of Rothesay's seafront. Street furniture plays an important role in defining the Town Centre and adjacent East Bay and Serpentine, and West Bay Areas of Townscape Character. An example of the typical Rothesay Victorian street lamp can be seen (right), painted blue, with decorative scroll at the lamp. However, in front of 4 Battery Place stands a smaller red-painted lamp, which is an example of a ‘Provost Light’. These lamps were erected in towns across Scotland to denote the residences of Provosts of Town Councils. A pair of lamps were placed on either side of the entrance to the Provost’s house, and remained in place as long as he held office. One light was removed once he retired and remained in place while he lived. This is a rare surviving example, though another exists outside 25 Wyndham Road, in the Ardbeg Area of Townscape Character.
