Scope and Content A variety of terraced houses and tenements were built along Rothesay's seafront during the 19th century. As the town began to expand outwards towards Ardbeg and beyond in the north, a series of small tenements were built on various sites along Ardbeg Road. This pair of tenements at 7, 8, 9 and 10 Ardbeg Road were originally two-storeyed, but subsequently extended to three storeys. At 7 and 8 (left) the tenement has been raised by a full storey, and the original roofline can still be seen on the side wall (left) where the extra storey has been given a cement render. The extra storey has been added with the use of canted Scotch dormers in the outer bays at 9 and 10 Ardbeg Road (right). Being in a prime location on the shore, many of these properties would have been used as guest houses or second homes for visitors to the island taking full advantage of the views across the bay.
