Scope and Content The main focus for expansion during the 19th century in the outer reaches of Rothesay to the north was along the shoreline heading for Port Bannatyne. Most of the development took the form of semi-detached villas looking out over the bay. However, several Victorian detached villas and cottages of varying scale are situated along the shoreline. This two-storeyed, three-bayed semi-detached cottage at 39 Ardbeg Road has earlier origins than its '1933' datestone suggests. The roofline and chimney of a single-storeyed rubble-built cottage can be seen on the side elevation (left), with the flat-roofed two-storeyed frontage a clear addition in 1933. The original cottage probably dates from the mid-19th century as it appears on the Ordnance Survey 1st Edition map published between 1880 and 1893. The extension added in 1933 has large tripartite windows throughout which takes full advantage of its shoreline position to take in the view over the bay and also maximises the light in the cottage. The box-like form of the extension is very typical of 1930s design.
