Scope and Content Photographic copies of selected original architectural drawings held in the Sir John Soane Museum, London. The collection comprises copies of drawings by Robert Adam and by James Playfair.

Archive History NMRS Photographic Survey of designs by Robert and James Adam in the collection of Sir John Soane's Museum, London. All drawings thought to be for Scotland were photographed, as well as designs for patrons with Scottish surnames. Many designs remain unidentified. The collection was photographically surveyed by SNBR, in part, in 1953, and re-photographed in 1976. The second part of this collection is the NMRS Photographic Survey of drawings by James Playfair in the Soane Museum, copied in 1975. Previously catalogued as Collection 262/40.

System of Arrangement The collection comprises copies of drawings by Robert Adam, arranged by original volume number, and copies of drawings by James Playfair, arranged by original inventory number.

Administrative History Sir John Soane's Museum, London, is the house and museum of the architect Sir John Soane (1753-1837). One of the leading architects of the Regency, Soane was Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy. He was also a collector of paintings, sculpture, architectural models and drawings, including collections of drawings by the Scottish architects, Robert Adam (1728-92), James Adam (1732-94) and James Playfair (1755-94).
