Administrative History The development is part of a comprehensive scheme for central Cumnock, a medium sized Scottish Burgh. It consists of 36 shopping units located around a two-storey covered mall. Access to the shopping units is either from the mall internally and under cover or from the street frontage. This gives the facility of display both externally and internally. One unit is large, accommodating a supermarket and above this area there is considerable office space which looks down onto the central mall. Access tot he office area is by an exciting stair feature poised within the mall. The mall itself has seating and provision for planting, with a ceiling form of stained red slates. Storage for the small units is at first floor level and because of the site levels these areas are served by means of an easy ramp from the ground level. The whole development is faced in ceramic tiles in panels of brown and white and the lightweight roofs are of sheet aluminium. Parking and hard landscaping form a major feature in the setting of the building. There is a related building which infills on the adjacent street, containing six shop units with office accommodation over. This building is slate hung to conform to the street character but the shopping areas are similar in scale and size to the larger development to achieve a degree of unity for the whole area.
