Administrative History This was the first purpose-built community school built in Scotland. The complex was built for Lothian Regional Council on a site within the Wester Hailes area of the City of Edinburgh lying to the west side of the city. Wester Hailes is an extensive local authority housing development which is comprised of some 5,000 houses. When the new Wester Hailes development was build in the 1970s there were no community facilities within the area. The brief proposed that the new secondary school complex for 1400 pupils should become a focal point for the community as a whole and should be integrated into the surrounding area, with all departments simultaneously accessible to the community at large. The school element comprised of accommodation for English, languages, maths, social studies, technical, art/drama, home economics, music and physical education together with related ancillary accommodation which is administration, library, common rooms etc. The area of the school accommodation extends to some 10,000 sq. meters; the accommodation for community use comprises a community hall seating 230 with a small platform stage, two lounges (one licensed), one discotheque, two general purpose rooms together with ancillary commodation extending to approximately 700 sq. meters. The swimming pool accommodation comprises a free-form level-deck leisure pool of approximately 50 sq. meters water area, a bench, spectator accommodation, circulation, cafeteria, foyer/lounge, changing areas, staff rooms, first aid etc. The scheduled area of the pool extends to approximately 3,900 sq. meters.
