Administrative History Mary Harman is primarily known for her archaeological and anthropological work on St Kilda. During the 1970s and early 1980s Harman undertook extensive survey work of the archipelago of St Kilda that continues to provide a base for current research. In 1986 the extensive field survey finds and research were published by Mary Harman and Geoffrey Stell, titled ‘Buildings of St Kilda’. Part of the survey work was the study of each individual structure on the archipelago with the aim to create a data set of locations, images and interpretation. Harman also carried out a photographic survey of the cleitan (a drystone structure used for storage) on the island. This research resulted in the completion of a PhD in 1994 titled ‘History and culture of the St Kildans to 1930’ at the University of Edinburgh. This was followed by the publication of ‘An Isle called Hirte’ in 1997. Harman played a key role in the identification and recording of many of the structures on the archipelago for the first time. Her survey formed the basis of subsequent mapping projects by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) between 2007 and 2012. Harman accompanied the RCAHMS teams on some of their field work. Harman also contributed to the ‘Exploring Scotland’s heritage: Argyll and the Western Isles’ publication by Graham Ritchie.
