Scope and Content A very large collection of drawings by William Notman, but also including many associated with his father, John, and various Edinburgh architects, including George Angus. The Notman drawings include designs for Blair Castle, Dunkeld Cathedral and Gothic gates to Dunkeld House, c1820. The William Notman drawings include many designs from the office of William Henry Playfair during the 1830s and early 1840s, including a competition entry of a design for the Western Cemetery, Glasgow, bearing the motto 'Alberti'. Notman's independent designs include 'The Elms', Whitehouse Loan, Edinburgh, 1858, and the Star Inn at Moffat, 1860. Also, a sketchbook, bearing label of 'R Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 101 Strand, London' (paper watermarked 1822). Including: sketches of Arthur Lodge and Dean Orphanage, Edinburgh; surveys of monuments in Greyfriars Churchyard; ceilings in Lawnmarket, Queen Mary's Room, Holyrood, Moray House, Mitchell's Land, Cowgate, Roman Eagle Lodge, etc (all in Edinburgh); and an unfinished sketch of Minto Manse. Also, manuscripts. Miscellaneous papers associated with John Notman including: specification for a house for Alexander Goelen, Shipbuilder, Leith, 1802; abstract of John Notman's claims on the Duke of Atholl, 1818; specification of Abdie Church, no date; specification of Kirkcaldy Church, George Angus, 1828. Papers realting to William Notman, pupil of William Henry Playfair, including: specification of a house for Andrew Rutherfurd, St Colme Street, 1825; specification for entrance Lodge, Lurgan, 1834; specification for Barmore house, 1836; specification for banking at Donaldson's Hospital, 1840. Papers realting to William Notman's architectural practice, including specifications for: Dalry, Bonded Warehouse, 1855; Haymarket Distillery, 1856; Shopfront 132 Princes Street, 1857; McLean and Hope's Chemcial Works, Leith, 1860; Tenement, Fort Street, North Leith, 1862; Brewery North Back of Canongate, 1867; and Mr Hamilton's Villa at Greenhill.

Administrative History The son of John Notman, Clerk of Works to the Duke of Atholl, William Notman was a pupil of the architect William Playfair.
