Scope and Content A large collection of material relating to the work of the firm, including drawings, photographs, maquettes, and books: Accession Number 1994/92 Fourteen boxes of glass plate negatives recording the work of Whytock and Reid. Primarily furniture, 'Chairs', 'tables' etc. although some topographical views are included, source unknown. Accession Number 1996/13 A collection of designs relating to the work of Whytock and Reid. Includes Parisian carpet and tapestry designs which the firm incorporated into its decorative schemes; proposals for curtains at Holyroodhouse; designs for light fittings, carpets and rugs and evidence that the firm worked on the interiors of Rankeillor, an otherwise undocumented house. Accession Number 2004/249 A collection of c.20,000 items of material dating from 1850 to 2000 relating to this Edinburgh firm of woodworkers and furniture designers founded in 1804. The material consists of drawings, photographs, ledgers, files and plaster casts. Accession Number 2009/165 An archive of material relating to Edinburgh cabinet makers Whytock and Reid, comprising 31 binders and a box of photographs and drawings dating from c.1890s – 1980s. Included are designs of items of furniture and fittings for named properties and clients, as well as ‘off the peg’ pieces. Clients include banks, churches and private individuals. Some examples include: Board Room, Bank of Scotland; Board Room, Scottish Life Association; Board Room, Freemasons Hall; Coldstream Parish Church; Dunblane Cathedral; Crail Church; Kippen Church; Cullen Church; St George's School; and 10 West Coates, Edinburgh. In the collection, the furniture is depicted to its best advantage, either in schematic views, or set out in interior scenes to aid the imagination of the prospective buyer. Suggested room layouts are also included. Photographs portray furniture and fittings either in workshop surroundings or in their ultimate destination. Accession Number 2013/5 Survey of Private Collections. A collection of drawings of furniture designs by Whytock and Reid.
Archive History The main body of the collection comprises material purchased in 2004 and 2009 (2004/249 and 2009/165) following the closure of the firm. Another collection of designs was purchased from a separate source in 1996 (1996/13). A further collection of designs was lent for copying in 2013 (2013/5).

Administrative History Whytock and Reid, Edinburgh-based cabinet makers, woodworkers and furniture designers. Established in 1807 by Richard Whytock and John Reid, the firm developed a reputation for high quality products, and gained a Royal Warrant in 1838. The firm worked closely with architects and designers, including Sir Robert Lorimer, creatings furnishings to his designs. The firm went into receivership in 2004.
