Scope and Content A collection of photographic copies of drawings and photographs of collieries and other industrial sites, mostly in Ayrshire. Subjects include 19th plans of a canal associated with the Muirkirk Ironworks, photographs of coal mines and works including Dalmellington, Minnivey, Pennyvenie and Houldsworth collieries, Dalmellington; Baron, Highhouse, Lugar and Mortonmuir collieries, Auchinleck; Killochan Colliery, Dailly; Littlemill Colliery, Coylton; Auchincruive Colliery, Monkton; Beoch and Knockshinnoch Castle collieries, New Cumnock; Kames Colliery, Muirkirk; Mauchline Colliery; Killoch and Polquhairn collieries, Ochiltree; and Kirkmichael House. Sites outwith Ayrshire include Benhar Colliery, Shotts; Auchlochan Colliery, Lesmahagow.
Archive History The collection comprises a succession of loans by Mr Harrison to RCAHMS for copying as a Survey of a Private Collection. No formal accession record has yet been identified for the surveys of the drawings of the Muirkirk canal (Collection 323/1) or for the main body of photographs (Collection 323/2) (both copied 1993). The photographs of Lugar colliery (Collection 323/3) were copied in 1996 and accessioned as Acc No 1996/5.
System of Arrangement The collection is arranged in order of acquisition.
