Administrative History The Scottish Gas Board was established on the 1st of May 1949. It was a state-owned utility, providing gas for light and heat through underground pipes to domestic, commercial, and industrial customers. Their headquarters were located at 12 Rothesay Terrace, Edinburgh. The Board centralised control of independent gas undertakings, following the provisions of the Gas Act of 1948, which nationalised the British Gas industry. Previously, the gas industry was operated by local authorities and private companies.
