Scope and Content Paper excavation archives comprise drawings, negatives, photographs, slides, notebooks and reports, in all formats. The Collection covers the length and breadth of Scotland, and takes in urban and rural sites. It includes projects by the earlier Urban Archaeological Unit.
Archive History Excavation archive material is deposited at RCAHMS by SUAT as projects are completed.
System of Arrangement Material is grouped by excavation site and organised roughly in the chronological order by which it was received.

Administrative History SUAT Ltd was founded in 1982 and inherited the staff and projects of its predecessor, the Urban Archaeology Unit (founded in 1978). The primary objective of SUAT was to examine the origins, function and development of towns in Scotland and their hinterlands through excavation, fieldwork and research. The arrival of developer-funded archaeology in the early 1990s led to the expansion of this remit to include rural sites. SUAT worked closely with Historic Scotland, local authority archaeologists, developers, architects and engineers. Community outreach and professional research were a key component of the organisation’s work. SUAT ceased operations in 2009.
