Scope and Content The Rokeby Collection comprises more than 2000 postcards and photographs of train stations around Scotland. The Collection comprehensively documents the rail network in Scotland between 1920 and 1968.
Archive History The Collection was donated to the National Monuments Record following Reverend H D E Rokeby’s death in 1969. The Scottish component was transferred to RCAHMS between 1969 and 1979. The entire Collection was initially dispersed, housed in geographically-arranged photograph boxes in the RCAHMS public search room. In recent years, however, all original postcards have been extracted from the open access photograph boxes and moved to the Print Room collections. In 2010 most of the remaining photographs and cuttings from the Collection were similarly extracted from the open access boxes, reconsolidating the collection, and have been rehoused by adminstrative area.
System of Arrangement Most of the Collection is ordered geographically. Some postcard views of stations are held in a separate postcard collection in the Print Room.
Access Conditions Access is unrestricted.
Administrative History Reverend H D E Rokeby (1904-1969) was a collector in more than one sphere, but is known particularly for amassing a vast number of commercial postcard photographs of railway stations. The Rokeby Collection of railway stations is largely built from commercial postcards and his own photographs, but Rokeby also acquired photographs taken by friends and would often cajole them into taking pictures of specific stations for him. Additionally, he took cuttings from magazines and mounted them on card. Rokeby collected photographs of many train stations in Europe as well as in Britain, and enjoyed both travelling by train and appreciating the architecture of the station. He did not, however, have a particular interest in trains themselves, and would often joke about his lack of locomotive knowledge. Many photographs dating to the 1950s and 1960s were taken by Mr O Carter. Mr O Carter published An Illustrated History of British Railway Hotels 1838-1983 in 1990.
