Scope and Content The collection comprises of various archaeological excavations and investigations; research material relating to the Battle of Nechtansmere; drafts of books and articles; photographs of archaeological sites and early medieval sculpture, and in addition booklets and off-prints of articles. Acc No 1988/501: Glass negatives, showing excavations at Ardestie and Carlungie. Acc No 1993/605: Research notes, publication drafts, photographs and miscellaneous documentation, including excavation material from the souterrains at Ardestie and Carlungie, Angus District, Tayside Region; the souterrain at Longforgan, City of Dundee District, Tayside Region and Dundarg Castle, Banff and Buchan District, Grampian Region. Acc No 1994/596: Original notes, sketch drawings of sections and photographs relating to the excavations at Carlungie and Ardestie, 1949 and 1950. Archive History The collection is comprised of components received from several sources between 1988 and 2015, including Professor Richard Bradley, Historic Scotland, Dundee Art Gallery and Museum, and David B Taylor.
System of Arrangement The collection is arranged divided into archaeological projects and published works.
Access Conditions There are no restrictions upon access, except where necessitated for conservation reasons.
Administrative History Frederick Threlfall Wainwright (1917–61) studied History at the University of Reading in 1935 and specialised in Anglo-Saxon studies. He went on to teach History at Liverpool College and University, then became head of the History department at University College Dundee, followed by becoming head of the Dark Ages studies department at the University of St Andrews in 1955. In the latter part of his life, Wainwright founded and organised the British Summer School of Archaeology in 1952, which aimed to get school children involved and interested in archaeology. His fieldwork, research and publications cover aspects of settlement in‘Settlement in Lancashire’, ‘The Problem of Picts’ and ‘Scandinavian England’. He was also held various roles in a number of societies, including treasurer of the English Place-name Society, a fellow of Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Historical Society. Between 1948 and 1950 he served as Honorary Editor of Transactions of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire.
