Administrative History Dr Andrew R Somerville (1923-90). Born in Paisley, Andrew Somerville studied organic chemistry at the University of Glasgow, from where he was awarded a doctorate, and at the universities of Zurich and Cornell. Working for ICI he was engaged in research into drug treatments for cancer, and, once more in the USA, on skin cancer. Having returned to the UK, he joined the Pharmaceuticals Division of ICS at Alderley Park, Cheshire. After retiring in 1982, Dr Somerville was able to engage in a wide range of interests, including the study of sundials, particularly those of Scotland, on which he published 'The Ancient Sundials of Scotland, Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 117 (1988).
