Administrative History Donaldson's Hospital was founded in 1851 upon a benefaction left by Sir James Donaldson (1751-1830) to provide a school for 200 boys and 200 girls. Bursaries were available for poor students, and applications from deaf children were encouraged. In 1824 the Royal Institute for the Deaf and Dumb was founded, housed in buildings in Henderson Row designed by Gillespie Graham. In 1938 the Institute merged with the Hospital, which from then exclusively taught deaf pupils. In 2008 Donaldson's left the 1851 building and Edinburgh for a new, purpose-built school in Linlithgow.
