Scope and Content A large collection of glass plate negatives and modern prints representing the Scottish subjects photographed by Country Life Magazine from 1895-1951 including unique interior views of Hamilton Palace before its demolition and unpublished images such as those of Balfour Castle c.1910.
Administrative History In 1897 publisher and businessman Edward Hudson founded Country Life Illustrated. He incorporated his magazine Racing Illustrated to create Country Life Illustrated, which was designed as an upmarket, luxury journal. In 1903 it was renamed as Country Life. It focuses on all aspects of country houses both in the United Kingdom and beyond, such as: architecture, artworks, gardening and landscaping, food and drink, and lifestyle.
