Scope and Content A collection of photographs and negatives of incised and sculptured stones in Scotland, and material relating to excavations at the Brough of Birsay settlement, 1936-7, and to subsequent research on the site. The collection also includes photographs of excavations at Jarshof, Shetland, 1932.
Archive History The collection was presented to RCAHMS by Mrs C L Curle in 1991: Acc No 1991/615 Photographs, notes and sketches from research by C Curle, and by her family: Acc No 2001/211 Several rolled drawings and diagrams relating to Cecil Curle's excavations and research at the Brough of Birsay, Orkney. The collection also includes material donated to RCAHMS by the National Museums of Scotland.
System of Arrangement The collection is divided into material relating to Brough of Birsay, to Jarlshof, and photographs of early medieval sculpture.

Administrative History Cecil L Curle, antiquary and archaeologist (1901-1987), was particularly interested in Early Christian sculptured stones, publishing several papers in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and in Antiquity. She was married to A T Curle, son of Alexander Ormiston Curle, first Secretary of RCAHMS.
