Scope and Content Material relating to the Aberdeenshire Council Archaeology Service. The collection consists of copies of record sheets from the Grampian Region Sites and Monuments Record; and aerial photographs taken during the first 30 years of the archaeology service during a program known as ‘Aberdeen Archaeological Surveys,’ or AAS. Elements of this collection were digitised as part of the Historic Environment Scotland Digital Projects team, 2017-2021.

Administrative History The service was founded by Grampian regional council in 1976. This service was incorporated into Aberdeenshire Council in 1996, with continued cover provided to Moray Council. In 1998 the archaeology service was extended to include Angus Council, and in 2015 to include Aberdeen City Council.
