Scope and Content Crathie Church, Aberdeenshire, from the south-east Crathie Church, a Gothic-style church perched on a ridge in a secluded rural setting above the River Dee, was designed by the architect, Alexander Marshall Mackenzie, and built in 1893-5 as a place of public worship for the royal family when staying at Balmoral Castle. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the church in 1911. The church, built in white rock-faced granite with roofs of red terracotta tiles, is cruciform (cross-shaped) in plan with a square tower and spire rising above the intersection of nave and transepts. The east end is apsed, with five stained glass lancet windows, and the south transept (left) has an open wooden porch built over the royal door. The church stands on the bank of the river east of Balmoral Castle, and overlooks an old churchyard in which are a number of tombstones of servants of the royal family. These include a memorial to John Brown, personal attendant to Queen Victoria for 34 years at Balmoral, who died at Windsor Castle in 1883. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
