Report: 'Wetland Archaeology. Carse of Stirling Archaeological Assessment'

MS 5737

Description Report: 'Wetland Archaeology. Carse of Stirling Archaeological Assessment'

Date 3/1999

Collection Records of AOC Archaeology Group, archaeologists, Loanhead, Midlothian, Scotland

Catalogue Number MS 5737

Category Manuscripts

Scope and Content This is a bulky report, of nearly 300 pages: 225 numbered pages, interleaved and supplemented with numerous un-numbered tables and appendices. Historic Scotland commissioned AOC Archaeology to assess the archaeology and palaeoenvironmental potential in the Upper Forth Valley, using desk-based and fieldwork procedures, aiming to assess the surviving potential of the area with particular reference to the wetland zones. The area, of about 117 sq km, lies immediately west of Stirling, encompassing the Upper Forth Valley (Vale of Menteith), from the extreme lower slopes of the Trossach Hills in the north, to the relic marine cliffs of the Touch and Gargunnock Hills in the south. It commences with a summary of works undertaken and resultant conclusions, proposed mitigation strategies and recommendations for further research. There follows: Stage 1: Desk-based assessment, establishment of a GIS database, a rapid walk-over survey, geomorphological mapping and determination of sediment zones. Stage 1b: Proposed strategy and methodology for invasive fieldwork. Stage 3a: Two data structure reports and costed assessments. Stage 3b: Report on palaeoenvironmental laboratory analysis, with prefacing discussion. Also a report on the evaluation of a wooden structure at Parks of Garden. Individual analytical programmes for each presented as appendices.
