Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Kilmichael Glassary, Argyll and Bute In the village of Kilmichael Glassary are two groups of cup-and-ring markings, carved into outcrops of rock. It seems likely that as more of the overlying turf is stripped away from the rock that further markings will be revealed. Lying partly within a fenced enclosure are a number of carvings spread across this large outcrop of rock. As well as the many plain cupmarks are four with unusual keyhole-shaped rings around them. The Kilmartin area has some of the best examples of later Neolithic and Bronze Age rock-art (particularly cup-and-ring marks) in Scotland. Similar rock-art occurs in north-western Spain, Brittany and Ireland. Why people carved them remains unclear. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
