Scope and Content Bronze Age cist at Nether Largie South, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute Though reduced in size, this chambered cairn at northether Largie South remains an impressive example of northeolithic cairn-building which was enlarged during the Bronze Age to cover a pair of cist burials. When excavated in 1864, the cist was found with its capstone in place, though no finds or remains were found inside. Originally the cist was covered by cairn material (some can be seen around the cist), and it is likely the cairn was enlarged to cover it. In 1864 the Rev. William Greenwell investigated the cairn at Nether Largie South as part of his series of excavations in the area. Within the cairn chamber he discovered fragments of burnt and unburnt human bone, flint tools as well as sherds of pottery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
