Scope and Content PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM NO 220 : THE TAM O'SHANTER ALBUM Photograph album with black simulated leather cloth cover with leather corners and spine, tooled gold lines, on thick card. It includes 30 gilt-edged card pages. The first page is inscribed in ink 'From H.M.C. to S.M.C.'. The album contains professional prints by photographers like Valentines of Dundee, George Washington Wilson and G Sommer, however some are unidentified. There are no dates for any of the photographs except for an 1872 view of Vesuvius, Italy. The Scottish views include Robert Burn’s Cottage, Alloway Church, Loch Katrine, Staffa, Dunkeld, Braemar, Lochnagar and Spittal of Glenshee. The album also cover several sites outside Scotland including photographs of Luggela, Glenmalure and Vale of Clara in County Wicklow, Ireland; Via Appia, Basilica di Constantine and the Colosseum in Rome, Italy; the hippopotamus Guy Fawkes and the elephant Jumbo at London Zoo; a group photograph of girls at Holly Hill School (there is possibly a second photo of them in the album); Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, England; Chxx Tor, Buxton and Dove Dale in the Peak District, England; marble statues in an unidentified gallery or museum; the Helvetiorum Fidei or the Lion Monument in Lucerne, Switzerland; the Leonardo da Vinci statue and the cathedral in Milan, Italy; statues in Villa Borghese and in a museum in Napoli and an eruption of Vesuvius, Italy, in 1872. The album also includes portraits of composers and two prints of drawings from the Academy of Art in Milan, Italy.
