Scope and Content Aerial view of Duntrune Castle, Argyll and Bute Duntrune Castle consists of a three-storeyed L-plan tower and some modern ranges along the internal faces of the irregular-shaped courtyard. The tower-house dates to 1600 and was restored after 1796 and again between 1954 and 1957. The castle stands on a rocky promontory on the north side of Loch Crinan. South of the castle, the promontory extends into the loch as a low rocky spit reached by a causeway and usable as a boat-landing in calm weather. The castle is incorporated as part of an irregular-shaped polygonal enclosure which has a crenellated top. The enclosure is thought to be of an earlier date than the tower-house, which was probably built on the site of an earlier building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
