Scope and Content St Anthony's Chapel, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh The ruins of St Anthony's Chapel stand on a spur overlooking the city. The date of its foundation is obscure, but by 1426 it needed repairs, and a letter from the Pope records that he sent money for this and for new vestments for the priest. The chapel lay in the part of the Park that belonged to Kelso Abbey and it was a popular place of pilgrimage. The dedication to St Anthony suggests that it may have had connections with a hospice in Leith, but there is little to confirm this. There is a strong tradition that there was a hermitage associated with the chapel, and there are masonry remains close by, but recent excavation suggested that these relate to a storehouse. By 1581 the chapel had fallen out of use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
