Scope and Content Excise Officer's house at Caol Ila, Islay, Argyll Caol Ila distillery was built in the 1880s using concrete, at the time a relatively new material. It is a good example of a distillery built in one phase to a carefully thought out plan. Since distilleries are often in isolated places, a house is usually provided for the Excise Officer whose job it is to make sure that duty is paid on the whisky. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
