Scope and Content 'Thief's Cross', Kildalton Chapel, Islay Dating from the late 12th or early 13th century, Kildalton Chapel is one of the best surviving examples of a medieval parish church in Islay. It was apparently in use till the end of the 17th century when services were transferred to Lagavulin. The burial ground surrounding the chapel contains numerous graveslabs, effigies and crosses, mostly from the Iona School of carving. One cross in particular is a particularly fine example of an Early Christian cross, known as the Kildalton Cross. This cross dates from the medieval period, and stands on a cairn base, protected by an iron railing. It is a fine example of a geometrically patterned head type with a plain shaft.
