Scope and Content View of Brechin Cathedral, Angus It is likely that this site has been occupied by a religious community since around 970 or earlier. The round tower, which was originally free-standing, and some sculptures within the present cathedral, are all that remain of an early monastery. Apart from the round tower, which probably dates to the 11th century, and some later modifications, most of the rebuilt cathedral dates to the 13th century. This view shows the fine west doorway and window, the north-western tower, and the round tower. The tower, which had its capped roof added in the 14th century, is one of only two surviving round towers of this type found in Scotland; the other is at Abernethy. The towers are comparable with many in Ireland which formed part of early monasteries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
