Archaeology Notes

ND48SW 5 4489 8488

ND 4489 8488. Immediately behind the farm buildings at Graemston is the site of a dwelling house of some importance, but except for irregular traces of foundations, no part of the structure now survives. One of the adjacent croft-buildings has a doorway with 17th century mouded jambs and a stone used as a skew-put, which is inscribed 1679 GGBG. These apparently came from the demolished dwelling.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 1929

As described by the RCAHMS but no traces of foundations are now visible. The doorway and stone are still visible and according to Mr Hicks, Graemston, Cleat) there was another stone above the fireplace in a bedroom inscribed GG and BG 1679 but it is now covered over.

Visited by OS (ISS) 18 May 1973.
