A map of the West Marches of Scotland and England (dated 1590) notes 'Knockhill ye dukes howse'. In Blaeu's Atlas, where it is labelled 'Duke of Hoddoms', this is shown as standing in a park. The Hearth Tax returns of 1691 include a reference to the 'old tower house of Knockhill'; this may have stood in the vicinity of Knockhill House (NY17SE 36.00).
