Archaeology Notes

NT27SW 192 2452 7068 removed to 2451 7061

There are the bases for two gibbets in the middle of Braid Road, just to the S of South Morningside Free Church Hall. Known locally as the 'hanging stones', they measure 1m square and were found to be c3cm thick when excavated during road repairs.

They mark the spot of Scotlands last execution for highway robbery in 1814 (C J Smith 1979).

Information from Mr G Russell, 59 Braid Road, Edinburgh 18 October 1992.

These stone bases are now situated at the W side of Braid Road, at NT 2451 7061. The gallows was specifically erected for the hanging of Thomas Kelly and Henry O'Neill on 25th January 1815.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 24 January 1994.
