(NY 1742 6469) Newbie Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1945)

Newbie Castle was demolished about the year 1816 when the present farmsteading (NY16SE 22.00) was erected, mainly from its stones. All that now remains of the castle is a small portion of walling on a slight rise in the stackyard. It is said to have been surrounded by a moat with drawbridge at one time, but there are now no remains of these visible. It was once the stronghold of the Marquises of Annandale.

Name Book 1858

The remains of the castle consist of a few pieces of masonry at ground level; but insufficient to indicate any outline.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 23 October 1967.
