NT17SW 14.00 13351 70994

NT17SW 14.01 13845 71012 Burial ground

(NT 1334 7099) Ratho parish church, still in use, which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, dated from the 12th century (RCAHMS), 13th century (SDD). On plan, it is oblong 76' by 20'2" internally, but it was considerably altered and added to in the 17th century and later. The church was restored in 1932.

The RCAHMS note a consecration cross, 4 1/2" in diameter on the E gable, 10' or 12' above the ground.

A 14th century tombstone is also noted S of the church. MacGibbon and Ross mention that the "Lady's Well", in the vicinity of the church was still in use.

Alterations and repairs ordered for Ratho Church. They include a new loft in the west end of the Church, lathing and plastering the roof, six new windows, enlarging of the Wester loft and a new Communion Table and Minister's seat. Abbreviate of repairs ordered by the Heritors. The cost amounted to 57.12.0 pounds.
