This stone is said to be a place of meeting by the Barons and Knights for the purpose of tournaments or jousts, and therefore called 'Jousting Stone' (S B Hare). Disputes are said to have been settled by the Barons and Magistrates in early times at this stone (J Robertson and S Younger).

This stone is 2 3/4' high, has an average breadth of 2' 10", and a girth at base of 8 1/2'. It is traditionally spoken of as the site of ancient meetings.

The "Justice Stone" is an undressed block of whinstone, as described by RCAHMS. It bears no inscription or symbols, and is situated in the Hopetoun Wood by the side of a track.

286. Justice Stone, Hopetoun Wood.-On the north side of a cart roadway through the wood, about a mile south-east of Philpstoun House, is an irregularly shaped and much weathered boulder known as the Justice Stone. It stands at the most 21 feet above ground, has an average breadth of 2 feet la inches and a girth at base of 8t feet. It is traditionally spoken of as the site of ancient meetings. The stone stands at an elevation of 300 feet above sea level. ii N.W. 12 August 1926.
