Field Visit (7 November 2023)
[Part of NT49NE 44]
Two tree-grown scoops (NT 46921 00007; NT 46895 00009) in the ground are situated 16m apart on a N facing slope and between 18m and 26m respectively from the cliff edge on Kincraig Hill. They lie within the security fence (NE49SE 44.8) surrounding the coastal battery (NT49SE 44). The more easterly measures about 9m from NW to SE by 8m transversely, while its companion to the W measures 10m from N to S by 8m transversely.
These scoops were excavated for the field guns which were installed during the initial construction of the battery in 1939 (Barclay and Morris 2019, 215). They are shown under camouflage netting on an oblique aerial photograph taken from the NW (M/042/NLA/067 0016) flown on 14 August 1943, while another aerial photograph (106G/Scot /UK-0004 6163;58/RAF/1263/F22-0241;) flown on 14 April 1946 shows them stripped of their camouflage and lacking the guns. It is possible that the trees were deliberately planted to provide shelter to the modern chalet situated about 25m to the N.
